Default 3 speed to auto swap

This isn't actually about a Mustang. We have a 1962 Falcon Ranchero , 170 CID, 3 speed. We want to swap in a C4. What all is involved or needed? Would it be less expensive to go with a floor shift or convert the column? I do have some basic mechanical skills (I can follow directions), Just need some direction. Thanks for any & all help.
