Exclamation Rockers

My car had a tapping rocker and I pulled the valve cover and tightened them down so they werent moving. My engine is a 68 289 2v. My shop manual says that I should set each cylnder that I am adjusting to TDC but I didnt do that. I think the rockers are positive stop non adjusting on the 289 2v. Was just tightening the studs until they dont move all I had to do? I hope I didnt mess my engine up. It supprisingly runs a lot smoother now.
