??? Am I going to be putting the SHIFTER INTO THE ASHTRAY!!!!! ?? Help!!
 

HHA HA HA..... Well It's funny, but not really.... I was doing some thinking about my combo thats almost ready to go in the car and thinking that some things were meant to be a certain way for a reason...

70 Stangs that came with toploaders had bellhousings with certain dimensions....

Well here's what I've done now, can someone please tell me I'm okay and I'm not putting my shifter into the ashtray and it'll be fine? or tell me I'm off my rocker and I've made a mistake here.

70 Stang with a 351 Cleveland. I've had the engine balanced to the newer 50 oz. 10 1/2" Clutch and Flywheel of the newer 5.0 Stangs. I've got the 10-1/2" clutch. I've got a Scattershield that fits a 5.0 Mustang. I've got a Tremec TKO with input shaft that fits a 5.0 Stang. And I've got the Pro 5.0 shifter that obviously you'd put on that transmission and comfortably short-shift in a 5.0 Stang....... That's all.


Am I overreacting? or shifting through the ashtray?

Does anyone have dimensions on a 4 Speed?

Sorry that was just an errant Yikes. I have no idea actually about if it will work, but in my 71 I just tookout the plastic housing around my shifter and lost my ashtray with it. the car looks cleaner without it and it gave me room to put 3 AutoMeter gages in front of the shifter below the climate controls.

On our 70's the ashtrays slide out from directly beneath the climate controls which are part of the dash.. It's all vertical. So I am afraid my shifter position on the tranny is going to be moving forward underneath all that stuff to put it more bluntly. That's a scary thought.

to bad. Mine was such an easy fix.

i wanted to remove that stuff too, it rattles like hell, and doesnt look all that great. But i really couldnt stand not having something to rest my arm on while driving. Mike did u have the origional clock there? And id like to know more bout the stereo and how to hook it up hehe.

I am not sure if I am reading this correctly, but basically you have the engine and tranny combo listed above and want to know how close it is going to come to the stock shifter location? Can you find somone with a 69/70 with a 4spd and measure the dimensions of the belhousing and transmission? That should give you an idea. Or is the throw on the shifter the concern?

You are probaly not going to like this answer but here goes the pro 5.0 shifter you have is useless for you car the trmec has three covers on the top of the tranny each one of those covers is actually an opening to put a shifter problem is there are three different shifters each location different and the only aftermarket shifters i have seen for the tremec are for the fox body. If you call tremec they will ship you a stock shifter and cover for the Fox Body shifter hole in exchange for the stock fox body shifter and cover to the shifter position you are going to use.

This Pro 5.0 Shifter I have fits a Tremec (on the back position) for a fox body....

Thunderbolt is right the first time. I want to know how close it is going to come to the stock shifter location. I don't know anyone that's why I am asking you guys.

Your shifter will fit in the stock location. The only shifter problem you will have is with the length of the shifter hitting your climate control, and stereo. I have a 69 with a TKO and a 351C and a hurst short throw in it. But I had to get a different shifter lever so I didn't hit my hand when I shifted into 1st,3rd, and 5th. Look for 4 speed shifter lever you can unbolt the the short throw from the Pro and bolt that one on. I used Hurst 4 speed shifter lever, looks nice and works perfect.

That's what I was hoping for! One, Did you use the shorter bellhousing though?????? I think the 5 oh has a shorter bellhousing. That's what prompts this whole question.

Obviously you are running a clutch cable conversion also if you are using the 5 oh bell....... :D

Used the scattershield, but yes cable set up.

Forgot to add that I got the one for a 351w since the C and W have the same bellhousing bolt patterns.

So what we've accomplished here is that the distance between the motormounts to the shifter hole on 70 and 87-93 stangs is the same.

We have also determined that the distance between the mount surface of the 5oh bell and rear TKO shifter is the same as a mount surface of a toploader bell and a toploader shifter.

So what if I had bought the TKO swap version with the longer input shaft that bolts right in place of the toploader, used the 4 speed bell, and 164 tooth fw, and 11 inch clutch, and linkage? Then my shifter would be back farther? Or is the bell not deeper?

5.0L bell for T5 is 7/8" longer than toploader. This is why folks use adapter plates with T5, TKO's when using early factory stock bells.

On my T5 installation with '69 351 toploader bell (164 tooth) and spacer plate behind Motorsport 302, the shifter is in exactly the same position it was with the toploader 4-speed. I even use the factory boot, trim escutcheon and modified 4 speed shifter handle on my car. The TKO may be a bit different in position but not by very much. I think you've got nil worries here...
