I can easily be wrong, but I've never heard of an air pump on a '66. There is no reference to one in my '66 Ford Mustang shop manual either. All mine had originally emissions-wise was a PCV valve going directly into the intake. Nothing from the air cleaner to the crank case either.

That's what I thought, but I was quickly shot down when I suggested it. Since I wasn't 100% sure I didn't fight it. But it's killing me, I have to know what year this is from http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif

As I said earlier, I can easily be wrong. Listed in my '66 shop manual under exhaust of all things, is the air pump that looks just like yours. I can't swear that other years don't look the same, but the picture on page 12-17 looks like the one you have. Find a '66 shop manual and check it out. Sorry for the earlier confusion. I think it must have been a California version.

Beginning in 1966, all California destined Mustangs came with an air pump and tubes entering the exhaust ports on the cylinder heads. Most, if not all Mustang air pumps, were the same whether they were 289, 302 or even Boss - the pressure valve is what differentiated them....

I have a 66 GT Fastback which is a Califoria car and it has the same looking smog pump on it. What I would like to know, myself, is how can I keep the system working if I can't find a anti-backfire valve for it? All my pieces are intact with new check valves and a filter in the pump but I can't locate the other valve. It's the one located on the intake manifold behind the carborator. Any tips or suggestions?
Thanks in advance |
