Info on 1977 Cobra II

Does anyone have info on the 1977 Mustang Cobra II like what motors they came with and specs/stats? Thanks for any info.

The motors they came with varied a bit. 2.3L SOHC 4 banger, I think some came with the 2.8L OHV V-6, and finally, they also came with the 302ci OHV V-8. The 302 changed name to 5.0 in 1978 was rated at 139hp @ 3200rpm and 248ft/lb tq @ 1800rpm. The Cobra II was availible with T-Tops, Sunroof, and I think I saw one with a dual sunroof once. 0-60 9.0 sec. 1/4mile 17.0 at 78 I think. They came with a small (369cfm I think) 2bbl carb, and the most restricted heads I have ever seen. Header's are hard to find, as room in the engine bay is almost non-existant in the V-8. They also had an optional restrictive dual exhaust. Curb weight was about 2700lbs, making the Mustang II the lightest Mustang ever made.

I had a 1977 302 powered Mustang II, which was essentially the same as the Cobra. I had the C-4 auto, although you could also get a 4spd. My little guy pulled really hard out of the hole, but after 4000rpms he dropped power fast. I topped mine out at 117. Of course, it did have 180,000 on it at the time. Still ran smooth and quiet, just leaked everywhere. Oh, muffler fell off, +10mph top speed. Talk about restrictive. All in all, I really liked the little bugger, it's just the uni-body was notorious for rusting out and weakening.

Thanks for the info. That is enough info for me not to buy it, but the $9,500 price tag deterred me first. It is mint condition w/only 71,139.3 miles and 98 cobra rims, but that is still too high for me.

Good Lord!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Somebody's way outta the ballpark on that sucker. I know of a near mint 1978 Mustang II King Cobra for $3000. If you are interested in vehicles like that, check out www.traderonline.com they have tons of cars to search for. By the way, I have never seen a Mustang II priced over $6500, no matter the type or condition.

I have seen Mustang II s for over $10,000 at car shows at World Headquarters in Michigan it just depends what they are. I have a 1977 Mustang Cobra II with a boss 302, C4 trans, it has a little radidal camshaft,68 shelby rear end, 15" 89 gt wheels W/ gatorbacks, custom exhaust with flowmasters, mint, vermillion red with white stripes, it is one of a kind. I have considered selling or trading it. But it would have to be a mustang of some sort. I have had this car since late 70's and did all the work on it including the paint which is beautiful basecoat clearcoat. And it screams!!!!

In 1977, the Mustang II Cobra only came with a 302, no other engine was offered in the Cobra.

And FYI, the 302 was renamed a 5.0 in 1979, not 78 as previously mentioned.

The price tag seems a bit high. If you really want this car, offer $6500 and see what happens.

I don't know about the specific year all engines were offered in special body styles. The 1978 King Cobra Boasted big 5.0 emblems on it, Stock.

I don't remember if I've seen a 1977 Cobra II with a 2.3 or 2.8 in it, but I've seen several Cobra II's with these engines. In fact the 302 wasn't even a option in 1974. Of course, I do belive the upgraded body style then was the Mach 1 still.

Unit 5302, you are correct as far as 74 models go, the largest engine was a V-6 in 74. The upgraded body was referred to as a Ghia. The 75 model was the first to offer a V-8, the 302, but when the Cobra II came out in 77, it was only available in the 302. I do not remember seeing a 78 Cobra II with any 5.0 badges on them, ever. In fact, in 1978, the Cobra II was referred to only as the King Cobra. The one you saw must have been a custom, because they all were referred to as 302's until 79 when the Fox body came out. As far as 74-78 Stang II's go, the engines available were the4 , 6, & 8 cylinder, and the top of the line car was the Ghia, unless it was a Cobra II in 77, or a King Cobra in 78.

Scooter, a few corrections.

The Cobra II was introduced for the 1976 model year. It was available in '77 with ANY of the three engines.

In '78 the Cobra II and the King Cobra were two seperate, distinct models. Once again, the CII was available with any engine. The King Cobra was available ONLY with the 5.0, and was so indicated on the hood scoop.

Unit 5302: just where would this KC be?

Any questions, anyone?

Thanks for clearing it up Cobraman.
