![]() Hello...
I'm new to this board...and new to classic mustang ownership. I've just bought a 1965 Convertible with 200ci and 3sp transmission. Basically it was a price that couldn't be refused. Was looking for a V-8 but they were out of my price range. Anyways...my questions. My questions are coming from the fact that I am not extremely familiar with the old mustangs: The transmission is extremely loud in 1st and 2nd gear. Sounds like a truck transmission. When it is in 3rd...it just purrs and sounds so nice. Is that usual or is my transmission about to bite the dust? Along with the transmission...the shifter linkage seems extremely loose. It is the stock shifter mechanism. It has about 2 inches of play in the linkage. Normal/Time to replace? When the car is running and the hood up. The engine makes an interesting sound. It sounds almost like metal rubbing against metal, though it sounds more like a vacuum leak. The car does not smoke. Isn't burning oil. Vacuum Leak/Something Worse? Being that the car has none of the emissions equipment of modern cars I'm assuming the slight smell of gasoline from the exhaust may be normal? Is my assumption correct or do I have my head up me arse? Thanks for any information. Slade |

![]() well as for the slight gas smell thats is normall. I have A 66 coupe same engine and trans.
and it is loud 1st, 2nd, and some what in 3rd. but then again I am preaty sure my trans is going out. not sure if it has anything to do with the noise though. I have been around old mustang for about 6 years. and some are loud and some aren't. have no idea why. but my brother in laws trans is loud and he has been running it for 2 years like that. sorry that I can't help with your other questions. ford kid |

![]() Well at least I know I'm not the only one with a loud transmission.
I figured the smell of gas was okay. My younger brother used to have a 89 Mustang without any exhaust or cat other then straight pipe and you could smell the gase a mile away. You could hear him from 5 miles away. I figured since this engine doesn't have any emissions control on it (correct me if I'm wrong) I thought it would be like my brothers mustang with no exhaust emissions control on it. Thanks again for the reply. Slade |

![]() It has a PCV (positive crankcase ventillation ) valve on it and that's about all for emissions control. If it smells like gas at the tail pipe, you're probaly running rich to some extent. Is that at idle? Must be for you to smell it. Might need a carb adjustment or even a rebuild.
Some slight gear noise in 1st and 2nd is probably OK. If it's major noise, and if the tranny is original then you may need a rebuild, but who knows. First off, drain and replace the gear oil in the tranny to the correct level. Any trans shop can do that cheaply. That might even fix it if the oil is low, or worse , empty. Check the rear differential while you're there. We are talking 37 years old here. Rev

![]() Can you hear this metal on metal sound when the hood is closed? If you give it a shot of gas does it get louder? and it is coming from the engine correct?
All hi performance vehicles usually give the smell of gas. It's my favorite smell. Nothing like waking up to 94 Octane gas burning.

![]() The sound isn't overly loud. If the hood is down you can't really hear it unless you are really trying to. If I hit the throttle cable the sound can not be heard (but may be due to the engine noise). Car runs great. Doesn't smoke or burn oil.
REV: The gas can also be smelled at speed. My fiancee was driving behind me and could smell it at highway speeds. Thanks... Slade |

![]() Does it have power steering? Or armstrong? If it has powersteering the "metal on metal" sound might be coming from your power steering pump. But when you hit the throttle it should actually become a little louder and more high pitched because it is directly run off a belt from your engine. So I doubt it's that, if you even have p/s.
I'm guessing your tranny is getting a little tired, and your shifter and linkage should definitely get checked out. You don't want that stuff breaking or falling apart when you're going down the road or something, ya know? |

![]() I had a tranny that was going out in my '86 ranger. It sounded like a tank. I thought it was kinda cool sounding, but I knew it wasn't good.
If I were u, I'd think about rebuilding it soon.

![]() No power steering. I know the sound you are talking about. My truck makes the sound.
How difficult is it to adjust the shifter linkages on a 3sp? Thanks for all the help. I'm new to this stuff. Slade |

![]() it's not to hard to adjust the shifter linkage. I adjustd mine. it took me about an houre but thats cuz I was doing it by my self witch means I had to get under the car adjust then get out from under the car and get inside to test the shifter. so try to get some one helping you so you don't have to go back and forth. but other then that you should have no problem.
