Carb and Cam choice for 66 w/289
I'm looking to get rid of my Holley 4160 and put a beefier carb and cam in. Anyone have any opinions on what a good match-up is? I don't want rollers,,, too loud. This is a car that is driven a lot, but I want a good rumble and will get up and go when I need it to.
Thanks Mike photogrfu@aol.com |

If you install hyd. rollers you won't have the noise and you will have the advantage of the roller lifter.
I have installed several retro-kits from Crane. With the hyd. rollers and all. Very happy with the power/performance and the rumble. If you go with an Elderbrock 4 barrel it is very easy to tune and stays in tune. No weak power valve to blow out all the time.

Re: Carb and Cam choice for 66 w/289
If this is a daily driver, I would just stay with the 4160. The vacuum secondary feature is an advantage for drivability and 600 cfm is all you can use with any mild 289. I used a 4160 with an Edelbrock Performer for several years and it was good from idle to 5500 rpm with lots of low end torque.
As for the cam, I can recommend the Comp Cams 268. I used that one for several years. It makes good power from idle to 5500 rpm. I recently went to a somewhat more aggressive cam and intake. I still have the old ones. if you might be interested, just PM me. Rev

I'd agree with Rev...
If you want to try to grab some more performance, try a spring swap. They only cost a few bucks, take a few minutes to install... I was really surprised at the difference they make. As far as the cam... one idea might be going to the roller tipped rockers... but I wouldn't go much more aggressive than a 272 cam. I also had the 268 cam that Rev noted, but thought I should've gone a step higher to the 272. I will say that it did idle well, which is one reason that I wasn't real happy with it. |
