Default Carb gasket or restrictor plate?

I was wondering, for the rest of you with 2 barrel cars, under neath the carb, above what looks like another metal spacer or gasket, is the wooden peice just a plain gasket or is it a restrictor plate?

If it is a restrictor plate do you advise i take it off? i want as much air/fuel flow as possible, even with the 2 barrel carb and intake.

It will be a while before my new intake and 4 barrel so i might as well try to improve my cars performance right now with what it already has.

Thanks,

Tom.

not a very good pic, but it gives you an idea. you can see the orange bonding crap between the metals on the intake.

basically im asking if my car is running a restrictor plate. Or anything of that kind, slowing down intake of air.

The two barrel intake manifold makes the 351 cleveland engine run from air coming through two 1.5 inch (approximate) holes. thats not alot of air/fuel = not alot of power.

i wanna know if i can modify my intake manifold to increase air flow. I hope this makes sense.

And in those pictures, you can kinda see how weird the intake manifold is. Its like , 3 layers of metal/watever else, and then the carb bolted on top of all that.

I'm sure, that "piece of metal" as u call it is your spacer for your carb, and the other is the gasket. Both need to stay on. When u look down the carb, u should see the same size holes all the way down from the carb, if the spacer is too much smaller, I think u can find another one the will have the same size as the carb. But basicly u can't do anything onless u buy a 4bbl carb and a new intake manifold. The 2bbl is why u don't have much power. The spacer, I'm sure, if u look close enough, u will see some vaccuum lines going to it, prob one from the valve cover, and others for, lets say, power brakes, tranny, whatever.

U can buy a new bigger 2bbl from holley, w/o changinf your intake manifold. Holley makes a nice 500cfm 2bbl, thats another way of getting more power.

By the way, are u still running smog equipment?

Also, the plate often acts as a heat barrier between the carb and the engine. If you remove it, fuel may frequently vaporize in the float bowls and vapor lock your engine.

Default insulator

Jeff's right. It's an insulator that keeps engine heat out of the carb to keep from percolating the fuel in the float bowl. Leave it on. It doesn't restrict air flow.

ok thanks guys, i wasnt sure. Two barrels are rediculous in my mind, especially on a 351 cleveland, a pretty big motor

I knew there was another reason, but I forgot what it was.

Yes, if anything the spacer lengthens the airway and tunes it for higher rpm. The "c" has a lot of torque anyway so lifting the carb gives a desirable effect and extends the torque range into higher rpms. I would leave it as is and plan on getting a new manifold and 4v carb.

Today i found an adapter, to fit a 4 barrel carb onto a 2 barrel intake. I forgot what brand it was, but it seemed pretty cool. Only 15 bucks.

It seems like it wouldnt make that big of a difference cause the air/fuel is still gunna be stuck going down through the 2 barrel intake.

But as far as gas milage/throttle responce/and the reliability of a new carb, it would be worth 15 dollars, till i could afford the new intake, dont ya think?

*It would only be temporary, so i could get the 4 barrel, while still saving money for the intake (as opposed to waiting, saving my money to buy them both at once)*

Don't even bother with that adapter, Save your money and do it right the first time!
No it's not worth the fifteen dollars even for a temporary attempt at gains in throttle responce( at best it will BOGG faster, but thats not what your looking for) Unless you plan on countless hours trying ta dial that 4bbl carb in.Not to mention attempting to set the timing on a mis-matched combo . Then once you finaly get the NEW CARB tweeked enugh to make the car run half way decent... Blamo time to install the new intake you saved for and guess what...? You have ta start all over with dialing in the carb ,timing, and most likley new plugs and points due to the for mentioned combo.
But hey on the flip side , it may well be worth the fifteen dollar investment , as you will certenly put in more then a few hours brushing up on your tune-up skills. lol j/k jmo
It's so much nicer when you can put a new package together, install it and let it rip with without all the BSing and it's cost effective too.

In short bog is a lay-term used to describe what happens to a engine when way too much fuel is added too fast . there are other reasons to cause this effect but lets keep it simple.

Default Bog?

Sometimes it can be inadequate fuel due to not enough accellerator pump shot. But Induction is right, it's usually a fuel delivery problem.

Default You did great Induction!

And I don't want you to think of me as a PINTA know-it-all, cause I don't. I liked your advice and agree with it. Keep it up.

Nope not at all , Ive seen some of your advice ( and others too) and it's done with little hoop-la and kept to the point in a way that all can understand yet it is still fun to read. I like that format and I am trying to adopt parts of it into my own lil form . lol
