Default carb problem

before, i wrote about an engine problem i was having. my 66' with a 289 was surging and cutting out. a few of you wrote me suggestions mostly that it must be a vacuum leak. well i found the leak and sealed it up. i decided to go ahead and rebuild the carb, so i did. i was very careful and replaced everything just like it was when i disassembled it. now the car runs great even on the road, but it wont idle in park or drive. i constantly have to pump the gas to maintain idle. if i dont, it stalls. should the barrells be totally closed off when the engine isnt running? if so, what pumps fuel into the barrels when the accelerator pump isnt being used? thanks for fixing one of my problems, can anyone help with the other?
