Default carburetor backfire

I was driving my 66 on the highway and pretty much right after I got off the car just died on me. I was able to get it back on, but when I drive it all it does is back fire and turns off. By the way I have a holley street avenger. Could I have blown a power valve or something???

Backfire, through the carb means LEAN.

If the carb is NEW, first I would check the float levels. If they are set wrong, high or low, you'll have a problem. Low would cause lean, not enough fuel, backfire and shut off.

Next, check for vacumn leak. Carb base, old hoses, etc.

Then check fuel filter, you are running one, clogged..no good

Check fuel pump for pressure and volumn.

Hope that helps...

Hopefully it's the carb... or timing... but my unfortunate experience is that backfires through the carb are intake valve related.

Usually if the intake backfire is due to super low timing, it only happens under a decent engine load.
