Default Chokes

I've got a 68 that was a bit of a basket case I'm putting together and I've got some choke questions. The original carb is long gone but I've got a 2bbl Holley for it with a bi-metal type of choke. The kind that has to be heated from the exhaust. Not electric.

No provision on the current exhaust manifold for anything like that tho. I do have one out back that MAY have had a tube for heating the choke, but the tube's broke! LOL!

I'm not sure if that's what the tube was for anyway tho because I thought the exhaust had to routed directly to the choke. The broken tube in this manifold isn't directly connected to the fire. It's just runs off of a lump on the side of the manifold that would eventually get hot, but maybe not fast enough. I dunno.

So what kind of choke did the have stock 2bbl have? Does anybody know if I'm supposed to route straight exhaust to a bi-metal choke, or should I just use the manifold for a heat source?

Believe it or not alot of people see the choke tube coming out of the exhaust and think it must be taping into straight exhaust. Not so, it is only suppose to take hot air up to the choke.

If you visit a local NAPA you can find what they call a "choke stove kit" this will fit most exhaust manifolds and take the place of the exhaust manifold with the tube. This is what I am using with my shorty headers.

Well I wondered about that Clark and thanks for letting me know. No fire in the choke! LOL!

Now I'm looking at this manifold with the broken tube. It's been in there since some time in the 60's and you know it's rusted and burnt in place. I don't think it'll ever come out of there again!

I know it ain't concourse correct, but niether is the Holley, so I'll just drill and tap for a 1/4" pipe thread. Bend me up a little line and it'll be fine.

I should probably look for some kind of insulation too.

Thanks again, Bill
