Classic EFI or Carb debate
I've got a 70 model, and my folks are wanting alot more realiability outta it.........
This is currently what the car has on it: Edlebrock Performer intake Holley 650 DP carb spacer and a K&N Crane cam (not sure of specs, around 270 lift) Headers, full exhaust Built C4 8" Rear, pegleg, w/ 3.73's... I'm almost positive that I'm gonna spool the rear, but thats as far as I've made it... I'm also pretty sure that I'm gonna talk bo55 into porting the heads But I'm debating between piecing together an EFI ( could get almost all the parts from friends) Or a new Edlebrock carb w/ elec. choke.. What do ya'll think? -Will

8'' ?
May have to excuse me but, I thought they only made 7.5, 8.8, and a 9 inch for rear ends. I assumed that you ment 8.8, but I guess I was wrong. |

I'm definitely with 420nitro on this one. I'd go with a carb'd setup, something I would rather being stuck with down the road b/c I could work on it a lot more easily and build power cheaper later. I would also swap to a built 8.8" traction lok posi. It's the kind of thing that saves a lot of hassle later on that you'll look back and be satisfied with.

Thanks man, I'm most likely gonna stay Carb'd........
Are you suggesting just getting a whole new rear end, or are you saying that an 8.8 chunk will fit my 8"?? Any suggestions on a Carb setup? I'm wanting street dependability and decent performance... Price really isn't a matter.... -Will

You could go the Mega Squirt route and build one of those controllers fully progmable off a laptop Run a throttle body and a hand full of wiring an electric fuel pump. stick with the stock type air cleaner and nobody would really notice. cost about 300.00 for everything going MS. don't have the URL off the top of my head but do an ASK search for Mega Squirt or Bowiling and Grippo.
8 inch rear the Mustang II used them with a "posi" unit should be able to find one in a bone yard pretty cheap that will slide right into your housing. Don't even bother with the 8.8 to much work to convert the quad shocks over to leaf springs and get everything to fit right plus you would have to do a 5 lug conversion on it depending on the year. And it's and Integral Carrier rear end it has a cover on the rear of it. Where your 8 slides out the front gears and all just like a 9 inch. DTS in Michigan and Currie have the parts your looking for. And if you go bone yard looking check the II's out for a L on the tag.

If you go the MS route let me know and I'll send you a copy of my VE table. And the software I used to get it running right. If there is not a group purchase going on join the list somebody always has one for sale. Try to get a Version 2 set up. Sometimes you can luck out and get one already built and tested for a few bucks more then doing it yourself. Going from memory I had to run a Vaccum line for the map sensor Wire for the tach signal wired in a TPS a power a ground the injection wiring, Pretty damn easy. All the wiring stuff is on the site. We chipped a ECM plug out of a S-10 ecm and wired it all up to the MS and tapped into mostly the orginal wiring on a 88 Vette ran the lines it did not have out the door for testing. Like I said it's pretty easy and progamable. I have two boxes one for the street and one for the strip.
Mustangii.net has classifieds you can sometimes find posi units on there going pretty cheap. and that evil site that I don't visit has a forum for parts. stangNOT.com

EFI
I swapped 89 Stang SEFI onto the roller 5.0 I have in my 67 F100. The cold weather driveability, fuel mileage and mid-range torque blow the Performer/Holley combo I had on it away! It's an involved swap...but I feel It's well worth it. The carb route is easier but an EFI retrofit is way cool! The best thing is that I can brag that I did it all myself.

Well, honestly, I wanted to go w/ the EFI, but just didn't look like I was getting much local support at all, and thats never a good thing when you've never done an EFI swap before
So, me and tireburner made a deal, and it looks like I should be the owner of a new 600 CFM 4Brl. Edlebrock w/ an elec. choke come Wednesday Hope this works -Will

I was with ya on the EFI. I like mine and I like the fact I can tune it anyway I want with the touch of a few computer keys. When I get my new intake done I'll post pics of it. Edelbrock Dual quad cross ram. It's going to run 4 injectors in the knock outs and two vortech style air meters.

Sweet....
And I'd still love to do the EFI oneday, but either I'm gonna have to get a lil more experience, send it to a shop, or talk my buddies into helping me down the road -Will
