Question Clunk & Steering Play

I have installed the new control valve, power ram, hoses & pump in the 67 stang. I also replaced the steeering box with a used one, but now I have 1/8 turn play in the steering (better than the 1 1/4 turn play I had before) and a pronounced "clunk" when turning the wheel before the pitmann arm moves.

Anyone have any repair ideas?

You made the mistake of using a "used" steering box. Generally, one can measure the amount of play by simply moving the steering shaft and watching the pitman shaft. If the steering shaft moves but the pitman doesn't the box is worn. Some wear can be compensated by adjusting the box using shop manual procedures. There are two adjustments: bearing preload and sector clearance. The box must be out to adjust bearing preload since the adjuster is located around the steering shaft. The idea is to take the play out of the bearings then and only then to adjust the sector clearance. For most 35 year old reciprocating ball steering boxes this is a waste of time. The bearings need to be replaced and usually the sector gear needs replacing. The easiest way is to pay the $419 for a new Flaming River box for your '67. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks Jeff65.

That will require a quite a bit more saving of $ for this poor workin' stiff.

Let me say there are cheaper but more risky repair alternatives. As you've experienced, used boxes are available because they have the same problems you now have. Do not buy any box sight unseen and if you can detect any slop in the box, reject it. Repair alternatives are not inexpensive and unless you're a machinist not worth messing with. Better and safer to buy a new one. Save your precious $ and potentially more.
