I have a 68 with a 289 and I ordered a new crank pully, when it showed up it was a 3 hole and the one that came off the engine was a 4 hole. All the photos on new crank pullys are 3 hole, so what do I have a Frankenstien of a engine. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Im guessing what you have isnt a 289 and isnt the original engine. (at least the harmonic balancer isnt original) Looking through the online parts catalogs the early mustangs had 3 bolt crank pulleys, I then went out and looked at mine (in the rain no less!) which is a 79 motor which has 4 bolts. Apparently they switched at some point of time, not sure when though. Perhaps it was actually in 79, though im not sure if the 79 is a 28oz or 50oz balance...pretty bad when its my own engine. Anyway, order a new pulley or drill out the one you have. Good luck.

They did switch to the 4 bolt, but I haven't messed with that stuff in a while, so I am drawing a blank on exactly when. I want to say late 60's though.

You have a lot of different options here to make it work, but the easiest might be just to send it back for the right one.

Seems like 1969 Ford went to a 4 bolt.

Frank is right. According to my John's Mustang Catalog, I968-1969 302 had a 3 bolt offered and 1968-1973 302 had a 4 bolt offered. Should not be such a big deal as each balancer has a corresponding pulley available for it.
