Question Crate motor accessories

I am about to order a crate motor for my 65, but need information on accessories. I am considering a 306 roller or 357W crate motor, but need to know what I can use off the front of the 289 that I am replacing, i.e., timing cover, water pump, alternator, and power Steering pump ?

Is there a kit available or do I need to buy OE brackets and pumps compatible with the motor?

Thanks
Dopie

If you go with just 306 roller you need no changes. Don't know what a 357 is...you mean 351 ? Also if you buy a crate motor (long block) it comes wth water pump, dampner, distributor, intake...all you should need will be plug wires, carb, and headers.

357 is a 351 bored .030 over. Yes it comes with a water pump, but I don't know if the water pump pulley provided in a long block is the serpentine type, which will not be compatible with the old 289 v-belt pulleys. Guess I'll ask the builder, but I thought that most roller crate engines used the surpentine belt.

They don't come with pullies. Make sure the pump rotates clockwise. Serp belt 5.0's have a reverse rotation water pump. Just tell the builder it's a replacement engine for a '65.

FYI: Whether it comes with one or not, a new engine should always get a new water pump. Kinda silly to spend all that money and then use an old water pump on it. Besides, if the old pump has been sitting off the engine for more than a week, it's seals have probably dried out and cracked anyway.

Take care,
-Chris

The water pumps that come on the crate motors from ford racing are for the serpentine system and spin the wrong direction for a V-belt pulley system. I think everything should bolt up from the intake down. I bought a crate motor, from someone I know who totaled their car about 200 miles after they put it in. The old block in my stang was from an early 70's truck and all the accessories from it bolted onto the new crate motor.
