Detonation sounds like real bad pinging. Or worse, you don't hear it at all cause the engine is too loud [ie. exhaust, induction]. It causes super heat and will hole a piston, eat valves. It will cave in the top of the ring lands so the rings will freeze in their grooves. Rattles the pistons and scores the skirts.

Worse case, after all that, is in beats the rod bearings so bad that the locator tang fails and the bearing spins.

Keep you total timing down, 34-36 degrees. But, bring the intial part up so you have low end punch. Like 10-12 at crank. Just limit the mechanical advance so your total, including intial is in the 34-36 range.

If you hear a kackle, pull it back some.
