Believe it or not, that was the point I was trying to get to. lol. It really doesn't matter which dipstick you use, or where it goes, as long as it reaches down into the pan, not hitting anything, of course, because ultimately, the only way you will ever be able to properly gauge how much oil you have is exactly as you described.
