I have a 65 289 freshly rebuilt with a mallory unilite dist and edelbrock 600 cfm carb. I have fired the engine and can't dial in the timing to 10 deg btdc and still have it run. It runs strong and smooth at 20-30 deg btdc. Could I be a tooth off?

You are 1 tooth off (advanced) this is easy to do and easey to fix. Move it one tooth back and you'll be where you want it.

Thanks Rev. I noticed you have 2.5" pipes on your 305. Do they work well with the 600 cfm carb? I'm getting ready to have the exhaust made up for it and was wondering if I should buy the prefab. units from a vendor or have some bent up with flowmaster mufflers. The local shop can bend up to 2.5". I was thinking of going bigger but don't know if it's worth it. What do you think?
Thanks.

I wouldn't go bigger than 2 1/2". Mine were done by a local muffler shop 5 yrs. ago for $250. I supplied the 3 chamber Flows which cost me about $120 at the time. I use 1 1/2" primary Tri-Y headers. My whole engine is biased toward low end torque (350 lb./ft at 3750). This combo works well for me. 2 1/4" may work just as well. My system is NOT mandrel bent, so may fuction like a 2 1/4" system anyway.
