Door Spring

Can anyone help tell me how to put a lower door spring in 65 Mustang? Thanks for the help

Hi Jim,
I've got one setting on my desk right now, so I have the same problem. One of the guys at work, who's on vacation this week, told me he knows how and we're going to try it next week. What he's telling me is that he takes a piece of welding wire, fishes it through the spring and the compresses it in a bench vise and them ties the wire off. He then takes a pair of channel locks and sticks it into place and cuts the wire. Sounds kind of like disarming bombs to me.

I'll let you know if it works. If someone else has a better (safer sounding) method, I'd like to hear it. That @$%^& latch has bent my door.

Thanks for the info Brian.......got mine spring in by compressing and using brake spring pliers. Wish I would have thought about the idea your friend gave you.......should work

Scott just took my spring to "load" this morning. He was on vacation last week. I'm driving the car to work tomorrow and we'll give it a whirl. Glad your fix worked.

The vise and welding wire fix worked yesterday. Not easy or fun, but the spring is in there. Took about 10 minutes of trying and cussing to make it go.

I just replaced mine in my 65 fastback. I used a snapon tool made just for compressing small springs like this, I dont know the part number but it kinda looks like a pair of tongs. It still isn't a walk in the park but it only took me about 5 min because I used a regular wrench to compress. Even this one you just compress it put it in place in the door hinge and let it fly and it usually hits where it is supposed to. The more you do it the better you get I guess.
