Cosmetic Difs of 65-68

Sorry... I am new to the old mustang areas and feeling really green. Anyways... looking for a project car that doesnt have to pass smog. So what are the visual differences between 65-68 mustang coupes? Thanks

'65 and '66 had the same style, were litle diffrences between the two exp. crome parts and interior. '67 and '68 got a little body change. I can give u more info if u give me some more questions. The best way to know is to go and look for yourself.

What are the weight differences of the coupes from 65-68? negligible?

ps I have already gone thru all the readers rides... its just hard to tell differences w/o knowing what to look for!

might check your smog laws.. here, 67 and up have to go...

I think here in Texas, cars more than 25 years old are exempt from smog tests as long as they retain the original pollution control equipment. That should be '76 and before (I think).

btw found some pics... I like the 67-68 but I will take a 65-66 how's that for indecision! lol...

smog in cali is younger than '73 I do believe

I'm partial to the '65-66 Stangs as they're smaller by a bit. Coupes are very common and cheaper, but get a V-8 to start with as 6 bangers are expensive to convert to performance vehicles.

Smog exemption in California applies to 1973 and older vehicles until January 1, 2004, at which point it becomes a rolling 30 years. In otherwords, on 1/1/04, 1974 and older vehicles become exempt, on 1/1/05, 1975 and older vehicles become exempt, etc. The law does require that a smog check be performed on all vehicles after a sale and prior to registration, regardless of year. On smog exempt vehicles, anything can pass the sniffer, but what counts is the visual. All original smog equipment must be present. Once it's registered, you can make any changes you want, but the smog equipment is supposed to remain. You'll never be checked by a smog station, though, so it's pretty much on your honor. The one exception is if a law enforcement officer stops you and inspects your engine, and knows for certain there is something missing. This is highly unlikely, but could happen. I see smog exempt vehicles driving around often with blowers hanging out of their hoods, and they don't get hassled, so you'll be okay. If you decide to sell, however, it is your responsibility to provide the buyer with a transfer of ownership smog certificate.
