Default Need help beefing up a staight six

I just bought a 66 coupe. The engine has been rebuilt and has about 5,000k on it. But the engine is still very weak. It has awful acceleration and I only hit 80 on the way home. Anybody have any ideas that will help it get up and go and won't make me go broke?

It's a six....they weren't power houses to begin with. 170/200 cu in.

I'd check the timing, if it is a real slug. If it is OK. Get a V-8. I pre purchase a mustang for MANY PEOPLE every month. When I look at a 6 cyl. I always give the lecture...."Are you sure you want a 6 cyl vs. a V-8??" Sometimes the customer is blinded by it's a 1966, not that it is a stick six, no p/s, no a/c, no p/b car. It is a base mustang. Not a comfortable car to drive, especially here in Florida.

There are ways to make that six have more power, but none are cheap. Power equals money, especially on a smaller engine.

When i first got my mustang it had a 250 inline six, which was a pretty fun motor. That one went through alot of oil though, so i replaced that with another 250 inline six. Mine was pretty strong, did burnouts pretty easily and i hit around 100-110 mph with it. (though who really knows with the old speedos, lol) I now have a v8 though, which is alot faster than the six, though still only seems to hit about 110mph.....(probably that 3spd, haha) If you wanted to keep a six you could find a 300 inline, which i hear are torquey engines. Sounds like some tuning would help you out, since i would think you should be able to go faster than 80.....

The 300 cu in [4.9L] 6 cylinder is a horse of a differnet color. It is a large truck engine and most likely won't fit in the engine bay, easily. It isn't from the same family of 144/170/200/250 6 cylinders. It is similar to 223/240/300 6 cylinders.

The smaller [mustang, falcon, etc] 6 cylinders have the intake manifold cast in with the cylinder head. Very restrictive. The larger 6 cylinders have a seperate bolt on intake manifold.

Thanks Gearhead999, sorry Huntingtonsurf21. Though like i said i had a 250 and it went pretty well, but if you want alot of speed and whatnot your most reasonable choice is the v8.
