Question Engine ID

I have a 66 coupe that was origanally a 6 but i did not know that when i bought because i was 18 and just wanted a classic stang. It has a 289 since i bought it and i was wondering where i could look to get the engine id number and where i could find a referance of what that number means

If you pull the starter you will see the info stamped on the block.

Can i Id the car by only removing the starter or do i have to remove the headers also, because if i don't have to take the exhaust off that would be great

You should be able to see the casting numbers with just the starter removed. That Falcon site pretty much tells it all.
