Exhaust system price
I went to a good muffler shop, well known around here. Scottie's mufflers. Anyways I went to see what it would cost for them to do my exhaust on my mustang.
I told them i wanted 2 1/2 pipes, to flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers, and a turndown pipe right there. i did forget to mention i want cutouts though. And they told me it would cost around 300 dollars after i buy and install headers myself. Does that seem way overpriced? They want another 180 bucks to install my headers for me, but they recommended i do it myself, for the experience. And do any of you recommend a different pipe setup? Im buying hooker comp headers from summit racing ($182.95) Thanks

Sounds like they don't want to install the headers on your car-lol OH well. $300 doesn't sound bad to me. That is inclouding the rest of the parts right? Most places aroung here want $700 just for the cat back system.

yeah thats 2 1/2 pipes from headers, to 2 chamber flowmasters, and turndowns at the mufflers. Im assuming an H pipe would be put in, and i forgot to mention the cutouts.
Has anybody else here installed headers in a 71-73 mustang before? My car looks like the passenger side header will come in from the bottom, but the drivers side will go in from the top after removing the p/s pump.

That 300 better include the price of the mufflers. I did my 2.5 exhaust on my ranchero from manifold to bumper not including the muffs, cost me 300. Canadian. Thats about 200 US.
Also don't assume anything. If you want a crossover, then you better say you do.

Not bad price....
I forgot to look at your sig to see where you are from, but I'm from Southern California, and I've been doing some shopping to have a dual exhaust installed on my '65 stang with 3-chamber flows, and the cheapest I found was $350. I went to a number of shops and $350 was the lowest, some going up to $380.
I found the guy I want to have it done with because he was recommended by a few people for doing very clean welding, but I'd have to install the headers myself, or I could have him do it, but I never asked to get an estimate for that installation. When I first went to see him, the estimate was $350 for the whole setup with 2-chambers, but when I asked a few people, and most said 2-chambers are great for a while but get old real fast on a daily driver, I decided to go with 3-chambers. If you look at Summit or Jegs, 3-chambers are more per muffler than the 2-chambers. Well, this guy still priced the whole installation at the same price. Oh yeah, and it is including an h-pipe. P.S. I just saw your sig, and it looks like you're from Southern California too, looks like I might need to check this place out, where exactly is this shop? I might give them a call. P.S.S. I looked up Scotty's Brakes & Mufflers in El Monte, CA, only place with that name in SoCal, and I asked for an estimate on basically the same thing you did..... 2.25" Piping all the way to the back of the car Dual-Exhaust w/Series 50 Mufflers H-Pipe as close to the engine as possible and they gave me a $475.00 estimate, AND THAT'S WITH ME PUTTING THE HEADERS MYSELF!!! Wow, the guy sounded like he knew what he was talking about though. Oh yeah, and he included the reducer's with that price, Sheeeesh!

If you install the headers yourself then you have the problem of getting the car to the muffler shop with no reducers, headpipes, etc. You'll have to trailer it. The beauty of paying the extra $180 is they are responsible for installing the complete system. This can be an advantage. Is it worth $180?
Your Hooker Comps need about 4' clearance under the car to get the headers in. How are you gonna raise your car 4' high at home? Can they be installed from the top side? I don't think so, not without removing and replacing the heads. You also have to remove the clutch linkage if you've got it and reinstall it with the headers occulting the clutch linkage z-bar. The z-bar goes back in easiest from the top using a Chevy distributor wrench to tighten the two frame bracket bolts. The bolts have to be placed in the header...several are very tight fit and take some patience to get started. The labor is about 1 hour per side and they are charging you 3 hours total. They're hedging their bets something won't go in easily. 6901-1's fit my 5.0L powered '65 with little hassle and no banging on them was needed. The only point of interference I had was with my California Pony Cars engine pivot adapter. I had to cut a crescent out of it to permit the 3L tube to pass by without touching. This would not have been a problem on a stock 289 or early 302. I'd pay the $480 for the job and be done with it. Note: I paid $400 for the same work but used 2.25 with Dynomax. |

Im from Highland, in san bernardino. The shop i am talking about is called "Scottie's Mufflers". Its located on the corner of Base Line and E street (north east corner).
I have a friend whos dad owns a gas station/smog place. Right now i am seeing if i may be able to use their lift to put the headers in. Also i have a neighbor who has jack stands, or at least has access to some. Yes it will be a problem getting to the muffler shop with nothing behind the headers, but what i will do about it depends on exactly how noisy my engine is with open headers. I might have to drive real slow and keep the rpms down lol. According to my auto shop teacher, the passengers side will come up from the bottom, and the drivers side will go down from the top after removing the power steering pump. I think he is right about that.

Aluminized pipe?
Make sure you're getting aluminized pipe. If that price includes the FlowMasters, and an H pipe, then you're getting a good deal. if you really want "cut outs" (cap offs), then I would expect some extra cost. Back in the old days, some of us actually had remotely actuated cut outs that could be operated from inside the car. BTW, no cut outs will ever pass the visual smog inspection anywhere.
