Default Finding an engine for my 65

i have a 65 mustang with a 250 in it. I want to adventually put a 302 in it. I was wondering, are the 302's that ford trucks have the same as the ones the mustangs have? Just trying to sort things out before i start to buy anything. I am thinking that I could probably go to a junk yard, and find a 302 there and rebuild it, or bore it out to a 347. What do you think?

Default Stroker 347

To get to 347, you'll have get a stroker kit with new crank, rods, pistons. Boring a 302 .030" will give you a 306 like mine.

And if you buy a used block, make sure it hasn't been bored previously. These are "thin wall" castings, and can't stand more than about .030" over bore.

This is what I'm going to get in about 2 years. I want to put a T-5 or something good behind it. It's the Ford crate 347 with 450hp and 400 torque.

A WC T5 won't handle that kind of power. Tremec will.

I can't remember off hand but does Ford make a four bolt main engine. I thought I had seen one in there racing catalog before. I was looking the power with the two bolt main and was kind of weary.

R302 Block is a 4 bolt main. Price is about $1700.00 and it still needs machining. I would go with the new Dart block if I had to do it over again, it comes already machined, and can be bored .125 over. Price is very similar.

The dart block with trickflow components and I think i would be good to go. I want to eventually put a turbo on it to. Now everything is going to be forged. What about compression, would I be safe to build it up as a 10. compression engine or an 8.5 compression engine. I want the 10. because it would be a long while before the turbo got put on but would that be to much pressure for the engine.

I think it all goes back to how fast you want to go. If you stroke the motor with a 3.4 inch stroke, and go .125 over bore, you will have a 363 CI. With the right heads, 10.1 C/R, good exhaust, intake, carb and a mild but somewhat aggressive cam, your ET's will be in the mid to hi 12's. ( assuming you can get it to hook). The Mustang Coupe's are very light. My 65 Coupe (daily driver) ran 12.90's on a 9 inch slick with no power adder, and a 306 CI motor. I also had to add subframes, a nine inch and SSM lift bars.

So it boils down to how fast you want to go, and still keep it a daily driver. Keep in mind that once you go sub 12's, now we need a cage, harness, SFI parts and so on. Sub 10's and it gets even worse.

My friends got a cage for the 6 coupe that he will be willing to give up, brand new. I am planing to put all the vertical and cross subframe supports and everything like that anyway and still keep it looking somewhat stock. I'm not going to bastardize it though. My main concern is if I but a turbo on a 10. comp engine will it hurt it.

Not if you keep the boost down. Many people put them on their daily drivers without doing anything else to their motors. Boost is the key.
