Ford crate motor

The below description, taken from the ford web site, is the motor I have in my 69 . I know that in the title it says"GT-40", but in the detailed description of the motor it says "with high flow iron heads". Not GT-40 iron heads. Are these the same as the GT-40 heads.

Can't say for sure, but I do believe you probably have GT40 iron heads on that engine. 270 horse with the E303 cam would probably be about right with GT40 irons on it. They out-flowed the stock heads and added about 25 hp or so, although there are a lot better heads out there now, they were still worth swapping out the stock heads for.

So should I port, polish, and mill the irons or buy something different. I was told I can get the machine work done for 400 or 500 dollars which is much cheaper than new heads. Thanks

normally I am for buying the newer heads and going on from there....but there are a lot of issues that go along with that including buying new rocker arms and valve covers, pushrods, headers, etc. It might not be a bad deal to have the stock (or GT40's if that is what they really are) re-worked for that $$$. You can pretty much just bolt them back on and enjoy. Go for it....a good shop can pull a lot of power out of the heads and you will have a lot less hassles to deal with.
