Friends '84 stang vs. 30th Anniversary T/A WS-6
Background: A friend of mine just recently finished his motor build in his 84 GT. It's a carbed 347 with AFR heads. He has it plumbed for the squeeze with 100 shot pills in right now. He eventually plans on running a 150 shot. Anyway, he's been doing some tuning on the carb trying to find the size jets the car likes best. He's run a series of 13.30's @ 104 at the track (3500 ft. elevation and lousy 60' times). After doing some more tuning, he managed to turn a 12.88 on the G-tech.
Anyway, later that same day, he had a friend come out with his 99 Trans-Am WS-6. It's one of those 30th anniversary models and he has it plumbed for a 100 shot of the funny. The short of it is that John raced the guy on motor while the other guy sprayed. He pulled about a car on him by the 1/8th and managed to hold a 1/2 car lead through the 1/4. Not too shabby for running a spraying ram-air TA on motor. He's going to try that 100 shot this weekend. It should fly. --nathan ------------------ '91 GT, Built 306, Wolverine 1087 cam, ported Windsor Jr. Irons, and all the goodies...click the link to the left to see a full list of my mods... Nevermind going down, it went down to a 15 year older car thats probably costed 1/4 the price. Nice kill.

Sounds similar to my friends carbed 347, but he has trick flow heads, with major porting, and a victor jr. intk, he is running some crazy mphs on the motor around 115! he hasnt even sprayed the 150 shot yet, kinda afraid the t-5 will crap out. Btw, what cam is he running?

He's running a Comp-Cams grind, but I don't know the specs on it.
He's really gettin down to getting it tuned up right. He should see close to mid 12's with decent traction on motor (read: that's high 11's at sea level). With the spray, he should be well into the 11's even at this altitude. That same guy he raced was out at his house last night when I was over putting on my intake. He raced a new Firehawk on motor and beat it solidly twice. In fact, there were a whole bunch of people over running by John's house. It's out in the middle of nowher so little worries other than hi-pos. --nathan ------------------ '91 GT, Built 306, Wolverine 1087 cam, ported Windsor Jr. Irons, and all the goodies...click the link to the left to see a full list of my mods... FYI: 30TH anniversary would be a 97 not a 99 and hence not a LS1 but a LT1. but judging by your buddies track times I don't think I would have mattered.

I'm gettig ready to order heads. Do I get TFTW (with moderate clean up from my head guru), or do I get AFR that are already completely CNC'ed and no added work?
Boils down to the same price I think. Any opinions appreciated. Hoping for .5 sec. off the ET. Rev ------------------ '66 Coupe, 306, 300 HP, C-4, 13.97 e.t., 100.3 mph 1/4 mi. |

Pony, I'm using 351W heads, 9.5/1 CR, pocket ported and gasket matched, 1.85 I and 1.55 E valves. Hoping for some more from after market Al. heads. Choice is TFTW or AFR.

Actually camaro guy the 30th anniversary of the Trans Am is in 99, the 30th anniversary of the camaro is in 97. So yes it would have been an LS1, it sounds like the 2 cars are a pretty close match. Although I think a LS1 with a 100 shot should be able to run at least a 12.8...but it all depends on the driver. Anyways, Nice Kill.

With unported TFSTW heads I gained 54 RWHP when my motor was sucking OIL. Im sure its a little more now. If you are sticking with the stock bottom end get the Twisted Wedge heads. If you are getting pistons with larger valve reliefs get the AFR 185's. Basicaly, the TW's are better than the AFR 165's but the AFR 185's are better than the TW's.....you want a 202 intake valve. ------------------ 95GT, TFS T.W. heads, Holley Intake, B303 cam, FRPP 30lb injectors, Scorpion 1.6 rollers, 65mm TB, 73mm MAF, BBK Longtubes, Flowmaster cat back, March Pulleys, MSD coil, 9mm wires, Tremec 3550 trans, Pro5.0 shifter,10.5 Motorsport clutch, FMS aluminum driveshaft, weld in subframe connectors. 190lph pump, BBK adj FPR. |
