Default Harmonic Balancer

I have a vibration when accelerating and was told it is most likely my harmonic balancer. I can see i have cracks in the rubber and little pieces of rubber missing so i'm shure that's it.
Does anyone out there know how to tell if it's a 26oz or 50oz dampener? I have a 302 but not sure what year it is since someone else put it in before i purchased the car. ( 66 stang , 6 cyl car). Also which dampeners are better the fluid ones or just the solid weight ones?
Any help would be appreciated.

Pre 1980 Ford small block, 28.2 OZ.

Post 1980 Ford small block 50 OZ.

* Balance can be changed by engine builder.

The 50 OZ Balancer backside weight will cover about half of the balancer. When its off you'll see.

Either way it will have a part number on it to cross reference. A good indicator is if the motor is stock painted gray, its 50. But that only changed with the 5.0.

Fluid dampers work good. For a motor warmed over a stock damper is fine. Unless that money is burning a hole in your pocket.

Thanks
I'll be repairing my radiator soon so i'll take it off at that time and chk the part #. Just wanted to make sure. I thought my transmission was going out with the vibration, one less headache.
Y'all have a Merry Christmas

Default u-joints

Vibrations can also be caused by bad u-joints. Does the vibration occur when you rev the engine while not moving or only when the car is moving? Just a thought.

It vibrates a little when the clutch is in and i rev it up. The vibration seems worse when over revving in 1st and then when i change to 2nd and start really getting it on the vibration is worse but when i change to 3rd it seems to settle down a bit. By the time i'm in 3rd doing about 70 - 80 it starts to vibrate a bit more.
The drive shaft has been balanced and new u-joints with only about 5,000 miles on the drive train. I didn't replace the harmonic balancer when i rebuilt the engine. I think i'll replace it this coming week and see what happens.
Hey Rev are you going to fun ford weekend in Baytown ? Our club (Coastal Bend Mustang and Fords ) will try and make it. I just got back from Houston today , can't wait for that event!
What Mustang clubs are in Houston?

Default Not u-joints then

If it vibrates while not moving when reving and the u-joints are relatively new and the drive shaft is balanced, then it's not in the drive train probably. A new Ford balancer is worth a try, especially if it's old like you say. I'm guessing $125 from a classic Mustang parts house. I paid $100 5-6 years ago at John's Mustang here in Houston.

The main Mustang clubs that I'm aware of in Houston are the Houston chapter of Muntang Club of America and Westside Mustangs.

Good luck with the new balancer. Hope that gets rid of the vibrations.
