Head games
I have access to a set of 64 289 heads, 66 289 heads, and a set of 70 351 heads. What would be the best set to use to get the compression up on a 302 with stock 77 heads? I thought the 351 heads would be a little better because of the larger valves, and they still have a small combustion chamber (anywhere from 56 to 61 cc) but would the ports be too large? The 302 and 289 heads use 1.04x1.94 intake ports and the 351 heads have 1.76x1.94 intake ports (WxH).

Go for the 351W heads. They won't give you as much compression as the 289 heads(54cc), but they give you a much needed increase in airflow. I've seen people make this swap a lot--it used to be the hot ticket for a 289 or 302. These heads work great on the smaller engine--definately not too large. I still don't think they will make quite as much power as a new after-market head would, but it's still way better than a 289 or 302 head.
