Question intake & headers

i am putting an 85 5.0 H.O 4bbl with stock 600cfm carb into my Ranger, i have to get headers to do this, and i can only find 1 1/2" primary headers both long and short tube, i know hooker makes 1 5/8" ones but they are far too expensive to get here in ontario canada ($1000) so i would like to know if 1 1/2" hlong tube headers would sacrifice all that much power and torque as compared to the 1 5/8" hooker or with the 1 1/2" be enough for my stock engine with very mildly ported E7TE's and a free floowing 2 1/2" dual exhaust with "h pipe". also does any one have a suggestion for an intake manifold that would best suite this set up and for keeping the power low enough to be a good street engine (im trying to decide between edelbrock performer, or performer rpm or weiand) thanks for any help you can give me

ok first off the 1 1/2" headers probabaly wont hurt you any... it will help your torque though... i used to have a weiand stealth intake, i really didn't like it all that much... it worked ok just not as good as the performer... with the smaller headers you might want to think about the normal performer, i think the rpm will shift your powerband too high... just my 2 cents

Try the Flowtech, now owned by Holley, 1-5/8" LT header. It's painted with questionable paint for $100 (US) from Summit and Jeg's. There is an availble x-pipe that bolts directly to the 3-bolt flange on the header also made by Flowtech. The quality of the header is pretty good and it fits T-5 and C-4 transmissions.

yeah the flowtech's are pretty good headers, but you will need the h-pipe or x-pipe that they sell with it... the flowtechs have the old style 3 bolt flat flange... so without the h or x they sell you'll have a tough time getting them to fit...

thanks for the help, i emailed flowtech to see if they had any particular headers for the application, and if not i think i will go with the 1 1/2"s as for the intake im still trying to decide between performer and performer rpm, anyone have any suggestions and how much of a difference is there between the two and how noticeable is it?

well both are excelent intakes... you probably can't go wrong with either... i know the rpm is a great intake and so is the performer... the rpm will work best in the 1500-6500 rpm range while the performer will be best off idle to 5500... so its all going to depend on what you plan on making this do... what are your future plans for it??? is the engine totally stock??? other than the ported E7TE's??? and most of all do you have the hood clearance for the rpm intake??? it is considered a high rise dual plane intake... so those are some things to think about... hope this helps...

thanks again for the help, the engine is just finishing being rebuilt and is basically stock except for the heads and i might use 1.7 rocker arms but i cant decide on that. however i dont plan on doing any racing and i also dont plan on going anywhere over 5500 rpm when im just cruizing around so it sounds like its gonna be the performer for me, thanks again for all the help im off to spend all of my money once again
