That portion of the switch works by dragging a contact point over a spiralled resistace coil. You might be able to clean it some by squirting brake cleaner aerosol (cheaper than electrical cleaner and works just as well) around there and see what happens. Nothing to lose really, just buy a new one if that doesn't work. About $20 a few years ago at John's Mustang in Houston. A Ford replacement part too. "Heche en Mexico" if I remember correctly. It's done fine for 5 yrs. now.
