I personally don't find anything wrong with the FE. Man I would love to find a 427 but then who wouldn't. The problems I have are the following. The FE is heavy. A small problem but that intake manifold valve cover seal is really messed up and prone to leaking. The FE is old and relatively few preformance parts exist for these motors. Hence FE stuff can get expensive fast. Therefore if you want to do an FE, why not go with a big one like a 428, or the 390 with a 428 crank. If you find a 391, which is a truck 390, it can be bored to 428 specs. Get a 428 crank and then you got some cubes. Couple that with an edelbrock kit (someone else may make good parts for FE's but I like the edelbrock stuff) and you got some real grunt and get up and go.
