Post Hi Po 289 on GT's

I was told by a friend that all 65-66 GT's are the only cars that are equiped with Hi-performance 289; another person told me that was not true. I am curious to know the real answer. I appreciate any responses.

All 65-66 GT cars were required to be equiped with a 4 barrel carb. So, it had to be an "A" code OR the ledgendary "K" code, the Hi-Po motor

Yup, 2bav8 is exactly right. Gt had two engine options, both 289's. A code (engine code) was a 4V carb 225 hp engine while K code was the hipo at 271 hp.

It is also true that the Hipo engine was optional in any Mustang, GT or not. It was also available in other car lines, most notatbly the Fairlanes.

Yeah, and if you really want to become ill, just think of how much that "HiPo" 271 HP engine option cost back then.

According to my 1966 Mustang Accessory Price List, effective date March 10, 1966, the following is stated:

the 271 HP Hi_Performance 289 CID 4-V Cobra V-8 (Includes Special Handling Package and 6.95 x 14 Dual Red Band Nylon Tires) - with the GT Equipment Group cost an additional $276.34. Without the GT Equipment Group cost an additional $327.92.

That's it!

A 4 speed top loader for an 8 cylinder cost an additional $184.02.

The nowadays expensive Rallye Pac was a $69.30 option! Amazing!

Oh well - the cars now are worth more than back then.
