Default Holly 4160 (? for jknapek and others)

While checking out jknapek's home page(see the "351 heads users...lots?s also" post) I was inspired to ask a question about the Holly carbs. My setup seems to be running rich (carbon on the plugs and can smell unspent fuel). I'm running a 302 with a mild cam and headders. I would like to tune the carb in better but don't know where to start.

Jknapek has done four things to his carb.
-4150 conversion kit (replaces the rear metering plate with a metering block)
- Quick change spring kit (using the purple spring with no check ball)
- #67 jets on the primaries and #69 jets on the secondaries
- 7.5 power valve
(Jon maybe you could explain a little about why you did them and if they did what you expected. By the way, nice mustang page! Keep the good info comming.)

More info on my setup can be found at

I would appreciate any comments on the different parts you can change and what happens when you make the changes to tune the Holly 4160's.
