Hot engine starting problems on 289
When my 65 289 4 bbl is hot it won't start. No problems first start in the morning (very frisky), and after its cooled for 30 minutes or so. But if its only been shut down for a few minutes after reaching operating temperature, its VERY sluggish to turn over or won't turn over at all. Wait a half-hour and no problem. Any ideas?

Re: Hot engine starting problems on 289
You have headers? Your starter is probably getting heat soaked, happened to mine also. You can either buy a smaller starter to have more clearance between your headers and your starter or buy a starter blanket. Im cheap, I bought the starter blanket. Nope, no headers. Stock 289 with dual exhausts. I'm thinking its the starter getting overheated, too, but it hasn't had this problem for 9 years I've had the car. Now this year,,,aggrivation !!!

Yeah, pretty weird I must say for it to just start that after nine years of service. Though nine years is a long time, perhaps its just getting old. Best of luck, make sure you let us know how it works out!

Re: Hot engine starting problems on 289
your starter is suffering from heat soak, headers of not. after nine years of service it is about due for replacement. remember that as the insulation on the field coil wires age, it breaks down, and you lose motor capacity. at some point in time, your starter decides to give up completely. you are close to that time.
