Pounds? You sure? I thought old Mustangs weighed more than the 5.0s and don't they weigh about 3,400 lbs?

Am I sure???

No, Not at all.

My reference is somewhat crap. Half the time it's correct, the other 50% is ???? In my reply I entered a period instead of a ? after 2700.

Every car I've ever seen, I've seen variances up to 500 pounds. As for 67 coupes, my old one was registered with the DMV at 2900 pounds. I don't know how accurate this info is.

My 66 GT fastback is registered at only 2600 pounds, which I think sounds too light.

Like I said, I've seen figures much higher than this, I recall an old magazine article that listed a 67 or 68 fastback at nearly 3400 pounds. I don't know if this included a full tank of gas and a driver.

All in all, I've become convinced that the old cars probably weigh a couple of hundred pounds less than the new ones. Although they are a little bit bigger and use more metal and less plastic, the old cars were pretty basic. Most new cars come loaded down pretty heavy from the factory, with power steering, A/C, Power brakes, Power windows, Power seats, some are hatch backs, A LOT more wire is installed in the new cars, and in general, everywhere you look on a new one, SOMETHING is filling the space. The old cars just had an engine, transmission, and rear end--nothing much stuffed behind the dash or behind the body panels.

There's no doubt about it, the new cars are really packed tightly. The old cars are just empty shells with a drive train, heater, and a radio.

Listed weight for 67 hardtop is 2568 lbs. I I think that is the base 6cy and 3 speed weight.

Thumbs up

Hey everyone, thanks a lot. I really apreciate the info. I've looked everyone and can't find anything and now I atleast have an idea of how much it is. I'm taking it to Sears Point (drag strip) in a month or so and I'll post the actual weight (it will have fiberglass fenders, hood and valance pannel then).
I asked about a 67 with a 289 because my 351w with aluminum heads weighs about the same as a 289 so that was just easier to ask. thanks again.

My 65 Fastback weighed in at 3075 lbs. with a full tank of gas. It has a 351-W and a Tremec and everything else was original or stock at the time I weighed it.

The weight on my old AUTO 289 Coupe that was a 1968 weighted 2850.

They are much lighter than 5.0's.
