If the plugs were black, it sounds like it is running extremely rich. He may want to jet down a few sizes. The battery cable also bothers me. Usually heat is a sign that the gauge of the cable is too small, but I am not sure if the plug issue goes along with the battery cable issue. I might start the car, and with a pair of insulated pliers, pull off each individual plug wire and hold it about 1/2 inch form the plug, to see if I have a good spark. Timing should be around 36-38 degrees total. That is where most small block fords are happiest, although my 347 likes 33 total.
