identifying rear ends

does any one know of A site that I could go to and type in the codes. of of the rear end or off of the tag of the rear end to find out what gears I have in there. cuz I just changed my rear end and have no idea what gears I have in there.

Just raise one rear wheel off the ground and put the tranny in neutral. If you can turn the wheel that's off the ground, then you probably have an open (one legger) differential. If you can't urn it by hand then you have a posi (Traction-Lock).

Assuming you can turn the wheel that's off the ground, make a chalk mark on the tire and on the drive shaft. make one complete turn of the wheel and count the number of revolutions that the drive shaft makes. That number divided by 2 is the axle ratio. For example, 5.6 turns of the drive shaft would mean 2.80.

If it's a posi, then jack both wheels up, do the same thing, but don't divide by 2. As in the previous example, 1 wheel revolution might make 2.8 drive shaft revolutions, meaning a 2.80.

hey Rev- I did what you told me and the drive shaft only turned around 1 and 3/4 of A turn. and I have an open rear end. so I am preaty sure I did something wrong. please help any one.

I think I may have had that bass-akwards. I haven't done that procedure in a long while. I believe you will have to turn the raised wheel 2 turns and the number of turns that the drive shaft turns is the axle ratio.

Sorry for the previous mistake. See if that doesn't give a more realistic number. Should probably be something like 2.8, 3, or even 3.25 turns.

Fordkid68, it just occured to me that you can find out what your car came with originally by looking at the data plate on the drivers side door. It should have an axle code on it.

For '68 open axles:
1=2.75
2=2.79
3=nothing
4=2.83
5=3.00
6=3.20
7=3.25
8=3.50
9=3.10

For '68 Traction-Locks
E=3.00
F=3.20
G=3.25
H=3.50

Rev I have A 66 not A 68 and it came with 3.20 but I just changed the rear end so I need to know what this one gots in it so in the morning I will try the new way.

no problem for the misunderstanding some time it just goes like that.

thanks Rev. yea you got it right this time. and I am veary pleased. cuz I didn't want to drop in ratio cuz I didn't want my car to be slower. and it turns out that my new rear end has the same gears as my old one. 3.20 gear ratio.
