IFS drop spindles on 65-66?
I WAS WONDERING IF MUSTANG II DROP SPINDLES WILL FIT ON A 65-66 STANG, SEEING THAT THE BALL JOINTS ARE THE SAME FROM ABOUT 63 TO 78. I WAS READING IN A BOOK WHERE SOMEONE WAS SWAPPING AN IFS FROM A 77 STANG INTO A 70 MUSTANG BUT WANTED TO MAINTAIN THE STOCK DRUMS AND IT SAID THAT THE BALL JOINTS WERE THE SAME.
SINCE THE SPINDLES FROM A 70 FIT INTO A 65 STANG, AND THE 77 FIT INTO A 70, WOULDN'T IT BE POSSIBLE TO PUT 77 SPINDLES INTO A 65 MUSTANG, THEREFORE BEING ABLE TO PUT DROP SPINDLES FOR AN IFS INTO A 65-66? AM I WRONG OR IS THIS POSSIBLE? |

'65-66 Mustangs certainly accept '75-78 Granada/Monarch/Varsailles spindles as that's what I'm using right now. You don't need drop spindles. Just use the correct springs/insulators and drop the upper suspension arm mounts an inch (ala Shellby) if you need to.
You'll have a good center of gravity and pretty good handling. If you need a more race type suspension, get the negative wedge kit, but that's really more for racing. Rev ------------------ '66 Coupe, 306, 300 HP, C-4, 13.97 e.t., 100.3 mph 1/4 mi. |

I realize that, but what my question is instead of taking apart the whole suspension just to lower the upper control arms couldn't you just use 2" drop spindles for an ifs.

Maybe I'm not understanding this right. Do you mean the use of Mustang II spindles without any other modifications? If that's the question, then the answer is no.
Putting in a rack and pinion Mustang II suspension into an early Mustang is a big job, requiring replacment of the whole front suspension (major effort). What about the other way around? The older spindles in the Mustang II? My buddy has a 76 and needs a spindle, I have a pair from a 67 I will give to him if it will work. I have heard of the swap that 65modified is talking about, that's where I got the idea about my buddie's.

I dont think that will work, the tie rod mount is towards the front in the mustang II.

Sorry, my post was meant as a lame attempt at a laugh. However if you are attempting to switch spindles from side to side, that won't work because of the tie rod arm pointing in the wrong direction. Good luck, Dave
P.S.....about 25 years ago I swapped a linclon versailles disc brake rearend into my 66 stang........me and my buddy spent 4 months and about 3 gallons of brake fluid and 6 different master cylinder combos to get the correct pedal height and feel.......thus my lame attempt for a laugh. This post being so old reminded me of that and I laughed at the thought that this car had been on jackstands for 6 years and they were still trying to figure out how to make those spindles fit! (obviously it could'nt have been but I am easily ammused) |

If the tie rod mount is to the front on the Mustang II and to the rear on the early Mustang, then swapping sides WILL put them pointing in the right direction. If you take a tie rod mount that is to the rear on the left side and put it on the right side it will put the tie rod mount in the front. |
