Well, in addition to the pleathora of other stuff that the car needs done to it, I can now add either a starter (I hope) or a new flexplate

I just went to run to the store, the car started normally, but stalled when dropped in gear, (happens if the car isnt warmed up). I tried starting the car again, and there was a grinding from the bellhousing as the starter and flexplate teeth stripped. Right now the starter will spin and you dont hear any teeth engauging, and the engine wont turn over.

Guess where I'll be Thursday Morning? BTW how hard is it to get a starter off with long tubes?

BTW part deux:
Cant you use a late model (ie fox "high torque") starter? if that is the problem, god willing.
Is there any special wiring required?

sucks man....

As far as replacing the starter, mine took only a small amount of fenagling, but that was on a 73 Cleveland, so your results may vary.

This may sound stupid, but di du check to make sure the bolts were tight?

I did this once, on my way to buy a starter, when I got there, and went to buy it, I forgot my money, so went to leave, no start. Went under to try to see if I could maybe get it going again, and found my starter laying on my headers, just grinding on the flywheel. Well, put a bolt in, and I was good to go. Starter was fine.

Actually I just got back in from playing with the car. It could most definatly be worse

I got the car up, and the starter out in about 10 minutes, the only pain was getting to the top bolt around the headers. Turns out the flexplate and starter teeth were ok, but it had stripped gearing etc on the shaft that the starter gear sits on, so the starter was spinning, but it wasnt turning the gear, just freewheeling.
Oh well, same net result. I'm off to the store tommorow to replace it .
BTW, has anyone else seen this: when I dropped the car, the springs on one side didnt seem to want to compress again, so it was sitting a bit higher on the right.

Would the springs being old cause that? I'll look again tommorow and see if its settled,.

Could be old springs, or old shocks. Push down on the high side, then let go. It should return to the same height. If it sticks somewhere, though, the shock absorber is either worn out or bent.

A high torque starter out of the late Fox bodies will fit but you may reconsider when you see what they want for one. A moron at Autozone told me somewhere like 150+ and same thing from a ******* from Pepboys so I guessed that's what they really want. It was a while ago though.

Wow, I'm glad I just bought the stock one, it was 47 bucks with the starter solenoid. The old starter was crap, I can believe how much better the car cranks now.

The only hard part was getting the top bolt in.

as for the tires, I'm sure it's fine now, but when u jack up a car, the tire catches on the ground, making it higher then the rest of the car.

Every 1-2-3 years, I replace starters and/or alternators. I just make good on my "lifetime warranty". Takes me an hour or so round trip to AutoZone. Make sure to keep the sales slip as they seem to "lose" that info from their computers.

New Ford starters or alternators can be had for 3-4 times the price if that's what suits you.

bought a ford high torque starter from the junk yard for 30-35 dollars this summer. required one extra wire from the silenoid (spelling??) on the passenger fender well to the one on the new starter...works like a dream.
