Unhappy Initial and total timing for 289?

The 289 is 10.5 to 1 with a 284 hyd. cam. I have the initial at 12 and total is 35 degrees at 2500 rpm. Hoping you guys can get me in the ballpark.
Thanks

DECEMBER 2000 HOT ROD MAGAZINE HAS AN ARTICLE ABOUT POWER TUNING A '68 302 WITHA MILD CRANE CAM, PERFORMER INTAKE, 585 CFM HOLLEY CARB & HEADERS. THEY SET FOUND OPTIMAL INITIAL TIMING TO BE 14 DEGREES ADVANCED WITH THE STOCK POINTS DIUSTRIBUTOR. THE HAYNES MANUAL SAYS 6 DEGREES WITH THE C-CODE 289 & 12 DEGREES WITH 289 H.P. HOPE THAT HELPS.

Your timing looks pretty good to me.

You won't be able to run quite as much timing as they were in that article, because you have 10.5:1 compression.

I'd just keep advanceing your timing till it starts to ping (usually will first start pinging when engine is at full throttle, low RPM, and hot) then back it off a little.

I'm running about 14* initial and 36* total. From what I've heard, this is pretty much normal for small block fords.
