Headliner insulation
I just purchased new headliner insulation for the roof. My question is, and to further prove my ignorance, which side glues to the roof? One side is pure insulation while the other side has a semi-rigid felt-type backing. I sure don't want to glue the wrong side. Also, does anyone know where you can buy pre-cut insulation for the back sides (above the package tray). I was thinking of just buying another set of headliner insulation from Mustangs Unlimited (only $13) and measuring and cutting my own. Not sure if it was the same type of insulation or not, or if it even matters. Thanks.

I just bought some from Home Depot (carpet padding the right thickness) for dirt cheap. As long as it's going to look good after, who's to know. That's how I did it anyway.

Kisner, the insulation side should always go toward the outside, this should be true for any type insulation.

Mr. Rodgers - just to make sure I really understand "outside", the insulation glues to the roof or the firm felt backing. Also, would carpet padding actually be better to use. The stuff I ordered really seems quite thin and cheap.

Kisner,
The insulation glues to the roof, the reason I said this applies to all insulation just look at a house when they insulate the walls. Any insulation will work but remember you are dealing with alot of heat on the roof, carpet insulation is not really meant for that. There are other types of insulation that you can use that reflect heat better. Another thing I have seen done is applying a few pieces of sound deadner first because this will help keep the "druming" sound down. If you are wondering what I am talking about just tap the inside of your roof with no insulation. |

Thanks - got it completely now. Might look at Lowes or Hope Depot for better insulation. Have seen advertisements for the Dynomat sound deadener through Eastman's Company, but they're expensive.

Don't underestimate the sound deadner, you don't have to use but two of those 12 X 12 sheets to make a world of difference. There are other brands that are less expensive.
