Default Instrument Cluster

My '68 did not come with a factory tach. I added an Auto Meter 8K one in the 2 1/16 clock opening. Look OK but kinda small and doesn't really match the rest of the gauges which, I might add, work marginally at best.

Has anyone tried the replacement instrument bezel with gauges from JME?

OK, the JME question didn't go well. How about I make this more general. Has anyone upgraded their stock gauges and if so,

o Did you replace the whole instument panel?
o What kind of gauges did you use?
o Have any problems with the wiring?

Thanks for any info on this.

Probably a bit hard to see, but I did replace all the old gauges in the stock instrument panel with Autometers, and then added 3 additional gauges in the center panel. The ones in the stock instrument panel are Water Temp, Volts and Oil Pressure. The 3 in the center panel are Vacuum, Fuel Pressure (thru an isolater) and Trans Temp. It took a bit of Dremel work on the instrument cluster, but they are nice and snug. I also had to cut the housing to provide clearance in the back, and to have a place to tighten them down, but it works great.

Ron, thanks for the pics. I like the way your dash looks and I think I'm going to go that route. Are all your gauges the 2 1/16 Autometer?

Yes they are 2 1/16 with the chrome bezel. I went and found an old back section from a dicarded instrument cluster, and then hogged that out. Ounce that was cut, I replaced the one already there. It will take a bit of dremel work from the front with some trial fitting, but once done, they snug in really nice. I did a drawing for the center panel and had it made up from 1/8 inch thick alum. and than had a buddy at a machine shop make it up for me.
