manual trans. conversion

Has anyone successfully replaced their automatic with a 5speed that bolts to a small block? I've been interested in this conversion for some time but I'm curious about the cost and parts and such. Any info would be appreciated!

There are several different swaps using the T5. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The two most often used approaches are:

a. Windsor-Fox. The W-F approach uses a late model bell housing and clutch assembly behind the sb engine. There are options for clutch linkage including, z-bar, cable, or hydraulic linkage. W-F sells the swap kit parts.

b. California Pony Cars. The CPC approach uses an adapter plate bolted to a factory toploader bell housing behind the sb engine. The clutch used is factory long-style. There is option to use diaphragm clutch and pressure plate. There are options for clutch linkage including, z-bar or hydraulic linkage. CPC and many Mustang vendors sell the swap kit parts.

c. Home Brew Swap. In this approach you engineer your own swap kit from home-made or aftermarket parts. This can be better for racing use since you can select McLeod or Lakewood bell housings and make your own crossmember to fit.

Generally speaking its not a good idea to bargain shop for the lowest price bits and pieces. W-F engineering is not the same as CPC engineering and the kit parts are different. The pieces assemble and fit much better when you don't try to mix parts from two engineering sources.

Prices of the above are competitive and vary according to what you already have, or can scrounge and what you need. If you start with nothing and want a new FRPP transmission then the parts cost will be about $2,400. $1,200 of this is for the tranny and the rest for piece parts.
