![]() i got a 65 body with a 67 289 hipo, i want to add some horsepower to this sweet machine. Would it be worth it to get a supercharger and go through all those adjustments, or is there some other lower cost option to significantly raise the horse power???? All info is appreciated.

![]() The cheapest and most bang for the buck is NOS. Heck, you can have it on the engine in no time and when you hit the button everything comes alive, and I mean everything.
I also would prefer a stroked engine to a supercharged engine for the street. More low end power. It will probably stay together longer too.

![]() with taht 289 if u are looking for a sleeper the thing to do is turn it in to a 347 or a 331. There is no way of telling the difference from the out side of the motor.

![]() Thanks for the help but i have another simple tech question. If i were to change the lobe separation to about 114 degrees, will i need to do anything else to timing or something to compensate for the change?

![]() This may get me hung, but if you have a genuine 67 289 hi po I would pull it out keep is separate or sell it outright to someone looking for a restoration project. Then I would build a 302, 347, or 351 for the power you want with a few more modern parts. I think the old hi po is great, but worth too much to make it worth modifying and possibly destroying.
Oh, and as for changing your cam and your lobe separation angle, yes it will mess up your current timing. |

![]() Thunderbolt makes a good point. The 67 model 66 casting is one of the more rare HiPo's. More people bought the 320horse 390 in 67 because it was cheaper. At the same time, the beefier bottom end of the HiPo will withstand more abuse than a standard 302, so it's a viable candidate for a build up. The 271 horse is probably a bit optomistic by todays standards, the Ranger I have with the 66 HiPo is probably the slowest vehicle I own, but it's ability to wind til the cows come home makes it one of the funnest rides I have too.
