![]() Hi all, I need some of ya'lls expertise, I have dual exhaust on my 65 coupe. The problem is that the driver side pipe makes a popping sound when iddling (I guess when driving too, but only notice when iddle). I think it might be at the connection of the pipe and the manifold but my stepdad thinks it may be a leaking head gasket. Thanks for helping.

![]() Well I had the same problem on my 66 and it turned out to be the connection to the exhaust manifold. I have Clifford custom headers on it now so it's not there anymore. The old stock manifold was just worn and tired and would never quite cinch up to the exhaust pipe (even with a new thick gasket). Check all the bolts real close as they can look tight even if they're not. Work the throttle linkage a couple of times while you're listening around the manifold and you should hear the rumbling/ popping noise. I would think if it was a head gasket you would notice coolant in your exhaust.
Hope you figure it out. ------------------ 66 Tahoe Turquoise Coupe Laser Red 96GT Ragtop 30 Years & 30 inches apart in the driveway! |

![]() Cool, thanks. I'll do that. That's what I was hoping it was, I have a new "dughnut" to put in the connection. I'm thinking of putting headers on but I don't know what would fit. I have a 302 in the car. Was there any clearance problems on yours? My car is lowered about 1". Thanks again.

![]() Well the doughnut gasket would be on the outward end of your exhaust manifold connecting to the exhaust pipe. If you have one - definately change it out. The popping is most likely coming from where the exhaust manifold mates to the block. Regardless, check all the connections. My 66 has the inline 6 so my headers will be different than yours. I had no clearance problems as I don't have air conditioning and there is nothing else in the engine bay that will obstruct headers. If your car is lowered a bit I don't know how much clearance you have but I would think there would be no problem with shorties. Just spray all the bolts with WD40 and back them out a tad and then tighten them. If you are thinking of aftermarket headers I'm sure there is someone here that can direct you in the right direction. Keep us posted!

![]() Right on, thanks. I'll try that fix. My car was a six cylinder before I got it. thats a pain doing the upgrade to five lugs and all. I appreciate the advice.
P.S. K-State? I went to high school with Michael Bishop. |

![]() K-State all the way!
I work in video and was the director of the Bill Snyder Coach's Show for 3 years. Bishop is a good guy. BTW my 66 will stay a 6 cylinder. My 96 is a V8 so all my speed mods are going on that one. I'm just gonna make the 66 a "crisp cruiser". There's no shame in having the peppiest inline six around ![]() ------------------ 66 Tahoe Turquoise Coupe Laser Red 96GT Ragtop 30 Years & 30 inches apart in the driveway! |
