Need timing help
 

Hi everyone, thanks for all of the help in the past.

I just got my rebuilt 1968 289 installed. Pro Com heads (shaved), Scorpion Roller rockers, Edelbrock RPM, Holley 650, Federal pistons and mild cam through long tube headers and flowmasters. Also have a 2500 stall converter but haven't changed the gears yet.

So I have been fighting with the timing. I can't use factory numbers on the new engine but it's acting strange. Highest RMP setting is over 40 degrees advanced. Anything over 25 and it is hard to start. It seems to run pretty good aroung 20 but I just noticed that when I hook up the vacuum hose to the distributor, the rpm's go up about 10 degrees. Is this OK?

hey Jaime, well im sure that alot of us fight the same problem, but if todays gas was in the 107 octane range our problems would be solved. so for now what i had to do is in the summer months i advance my timing up just to the point that it will start ok when the motor is good and hot. i did break down and buy a mini starter which give me a lil bit more cranking (or spin) power than that old starter did and i was able to add a lil more timing. so i hope ive kinda helped and i do share your timing pains, every now and then ill add a lil race fuel and bump up my timing and have a lil fun but after that tanks gone its back to the super no lead :rolleyes: ....lol

ok, here is what is going on. the vaccum hose u r using is placed in the wrong spot.

u hooked it up to a place where vaccum is there 100% of the time, which is used for everything BUT the distribitor. There should be a line that only has vaccum when the carb is opened up to a certain spot. Easy way to find it is get a vaccum gauge, and look for a line coming from the carb that has no PSI. hook up the gauge, and rev the motor a few times (while running of course) and u should see psi build as the revs go up.

this should let u be able to properly time ur car.

I understand how you would think that but it is pluged into the port that the manual lables, Timed port to Distributor. That is why I am so confused. I know I'm not getting everything out of her with that timing.

from that right there tells me it's plugged into the wrong port. Or, ur idle is set too high
