![]() The original six in my 66 coupe is getting tired and needs a rebuild. So I was thinking time for a crate engine! What are you guys running? I don't need a race car, but I need an engine that will keep up with my 5.0. Also, what will fit without to mush hassle? Thanks guys!

![]() The six cylinders were built with a lesser grade of materials from axles, to cooling, to brakes, to suspension. To move up to a V8 takes a lot. You practically have to rebuild everything on the car.

![]() Ron1 is right. Everything is lighter duty on your car. It is probably easier to sell car and buy a V-8 car. I'm sure it is cheaper.
You'll need Transmission Flywheel/flexplate Clutch/torque convertor Rear axle Springs Steering, center link will hit pan P/S mounting if you have P/S Alternator mounting Starter Carb Dist. Radiator A/C if you have it Crossmember, maybe Driveshaft Motor Mounts That's all I can think of right now. Think about it.... |

![]() I bought a '65 I-6 and converted it to a V8, it didn't take too much time or money to convert. I used engine mounts from like a '67 to put in a 351. I recommend that setup.

![]() My 69 is an "L" code which means it had a six cylinder in it a while back. I know the history of the car and it's had a 302 in it for 12 yrs. But I still have the 8" rear end and haven't had any problems with it. Even raced it on slicks last Fri. night. Good luck.

![]() I had to change the axles, but they don't cost much. I was putting in a 9-inch rear-end anyway. The tranny should be able to stay, depending on how much power you plan to make. I put in a T56, it used to be a 3spd auto.

![]() Generally the I6 to V8 conversion goes something like this. Change front and rear suspension to heavier set up. Change brakes at all 4 wheels, change cooling system. Convert from 4 lug wheels to 5 lug. Change tranny if manual. All of this depends on how hot you want to go. I would recomend it all if you want 5.0 power as well as upgraded safety features. Is short it is not a cheap proposition, but if you are going for a total rebuild most of this stuff will get changed anyway.

![]() My trans is an auto so that should be fine. I am also planning on a 9 inch ford rear. What companies should I talk to about the front and rear suspension and brake upgrades?

![]() A good place to start is Mustangs Plus for the suspension advice and parts, Brake upgrades can be purchased from several parts vendors. Alot of people, including myself, built my own conversion kit from a donor car but the kits are easier but more costly.
