You aren't the first and I've heard many warnings to go to a professional shop first where they can cut and bend what you need. Be sure you have your emergency brake hardware installed and adjusted since the usual technique is to run from the headers inward and along the transmission tunnel, mufflers in body depressions then branch out to the sides, over the axle and around the sides of the gas tank. If the e-brake and driveshaft are not in place, you can later have a conflict.

Excluding headers the job cost here is about $400 including mufflers (Dynomax Superturbos) plus H or X pipe if you want one. I chose to use neither H or X because of e-brake cable clearance and clearance around the drive shaft. I use Hooker Comp 6901-1 headers. Sound is smooth rumble during acceleration in 1-4 then fairly quiet in 5th.

I'm running 2 1/4 behind the Hooker long tubes and then there's a 5' long tube going back to the Dynomax, they are bracketed at the rear to the front of the axle hump. Tail pipes go out from there over the axle and around the tank and are terminated in 45 degree chrome tips. Looks very neat and tidy. These are fine with my crate 302 roller GT40 head engine. These are the recommended size pipes for sb 302s and smaller (both Edelbrock and Holley recommend) 2 1/4 on 302's and smaller and 2 1/2's on 351's and larger. I stuck with the recommended since they have the test gear and dynos.

I am running shelby Tri y headers that connect to 2 1/2 exhause then to 2 chamber flowmasters then after the flowmasters it goes to 2 1/2 inch turndowns that come out right before the axle so from behind my car you see the newly painted rear i just put in and the shiny turndowns. sounds great. nice rumble and great sound on accelleration. the reason its that short is because i used to have it just like jeff65 said how it goes through the trans tunnel and around gas tank but i used to have it rattle a lot so i shortned it and put turndows on. best thing i ever did.

ok kewl now where did you get the rest of the exhaust pipes from to complete it or did you guys have it made ???

On my 68 I run Hookers. Then had the "H" pipe made at a local exhaust shop out of 2 1/2 inch. Flowmaster and the tail pipes, 2 1/2 inch also came from Flowmaster also. Then welded the factory GT split tips on.

I'm not sure if these pipes are still available. If they aren't get the local shop to make some for you.

Then everything fits and doesn't rattle.

Sounds good too.

Tri-Y headers to custom (local shop) 2 1/2" aluminized pipes with a cross over and 3 chamber FlowMasters. I run mine out the back through a GT valance and chrome tips (resonators). Good low end torque and red lines at 6000 RPM.

I installed the Hookers, trailer transported the car to a performance muffler shop and said, "Hey Doug! can you install a performance exhaust system on my 'Stang. Two hours later it had a real neat and tidy 2.25" exhaust system. No pain and no strain...the cost may have been $50 over the cost of a complete do-it-youself system. Total bill was $400. Why did I do it this way? I listened to all the problems folks had installing pre-fit systems here on the web and decided the hassle wasn't worth $50.
