No 289 for a real '64 1/2 ??????

I am sure i read somewhere that a true '64 1/2 stang wasn't available w/ the 289.
Only V8 offered was the 260.
Is this true?? or no Hi-Po for '64 1/2???
I had a '66 and '65 but curious on that engine option.
Also what is the "bevel" on the hood that is only on a true '64 1/2?????
Thanks everybody...........

Don't believe 289's were available until after the early 65's (64 1/2's) were out. They had alternators and the guages were better. Ast least, that's my recollection.

Yea, the 289 was available in 64. The Hi Po version (k code) is the only engine from 64 that carried over to 65. The other 289 available was the 4V D code 220hp 289. This engine was replaced by A code 225hp 289 in 65. As for the hood bevel, I have never heard of such a thing. There may be some difference in the way the lip is rolled or something.

Y2KGT 04-21-2001 11:50 PM

The 64 1/2 had a different hood and headlight buckets than the 65-66. The "bevel" that NOS_Notch was talking about is on the leading edge of the hood that is directly over the headlight bucket. The headlight bucket also has an indention opposite of the one on the hood. The Mustang Recoginition guide has an illustration that shows the differences.

Also , there is no such thing as a 64 1/2 fastback "GT" . The 64 1/2 did have the rare option of a altinator charging system. But there arn't alot to be found .

Ok, unless I'm way off on my information here goes.

From April 16, 1964 (debut of mustang) until mid August of 1964, the engine choices were a 170 C.I. six cylinder, a 260 C.I. 2 bbl V8 or a 289 C.I. 4 bbl V8 and came with a three-speed, four-speed or automatic.

In ’65 the 170 six and 260 V8 were dropped for a 200 six and a 289 2bbl V8.

hope this helps.

There are 64 1/2 HiPo's out there, but not many. The HiPo motor was installed into the Mustang starting in June of 64. The easiest way to identify one visually is by the generator in place of an alternator.

Was the K code really available right from the start? I thought there was some time in there when all that was available in V-8 was the 260.

Rev, I tend to agree with you. The Mustang came out while I was in High School and being the gearhead I am, I seem to remember that there was only a 260 in the beginning. Big thing was putting Doug headers on them.

Rev 04-23-2001 10:44 PM

Gearhead, I was around in when the small block came out in about '63. I went to exhibition things promoted by Ford. I even convinced my mom to buy a '63 Fairlane 221 with a 3-speed, ha,ha. I never saw any 64 1/5 (early 65's) with the Falcon speedometers and generators that had a 289. That doesn't mean there weren't any. I never saw any 1961 Chevy's with 409's either, but I've been told there were some. Not too sure that I believe 64-289 or 61-409, but there may be a few.

And so when was the original introduction of the Stang with any 289? That's the question we have here. It was definitely in the '65 model year. But when the heck was it?

Taken from www.classicponycars.com , under the History section.

"The 1964½, as it was later called, was available in only two models: the coupe and convertible. Both models featured a lengthened hood and shortened rear deck, chrome wrap-around bumpers, chrome grille with a running horse, and full wheel covers. Both models were available with a 170 cid, 101 horsepower, 6 cylinder engine, a 260-2V, 164 horsepower V-8, a 289-4V, 210 horsepower V-8 and, starting in June, a fire breathing, 4 barrel, solid lifter, 271 horsepower, 289 cid V-8 engine. The buyer had a choice of a 3 speed, 4 speed or automatic transmission, and a variety of rear end gear ratios."

Not sure how accurate the website is but they seemed to know some good information. I've continued to look for a site with "official" information but so far no luck. Sorry guys, hope this helps some.

Rev,

Tend to agree with you. I too have never seen a 64 1/2, 289 or a 61, 409. I too have heard all the stories, but I don't believe what I hear and only half of what I see.

I also believe that the hard to find 61, 409's were really 62 Bel Air's with the large 61 rear window. To the untrained teenage eye I'm sure they look the same.

Probably the same goes for the 64 1/2 Mustang too.

Pulled out my copy of the Mustang Red Book. According to this source, Mustangs built from the start of production in March of 1964 to August 17, 1964 had either the 101 hp 170cid six (U code) the 164 hp 260cid (F code)or 210 hp 289 with a 4bbl carb (D code) and after June 1st the 271 hp 289 cid (K code) was made avaliable - there was no 2bbl 289 avaliable on the early cars. After August 17, 1964 the 170 six and 260 V8 were dropped and replaced with the 120 hp 200 cid six (T code) and the 200 hp 289 cid (C code. The 210 hp D code was upgraded to 225 hp and was now called an A code. The K code was carried over as is, except the generator was replaced by an alternator.

Just to clarify, didn't the "65" mustang actually begin in August '64 when they swapped the I6 and 260 V8 out? From what I understang the 64 1/2 mustangs production was from april-august of '64. From august until end of 65 the mustang was a "65".

Am I wrong?

Mercury 04-26-2001 01:50 AM

Yes there were 289's in early 65's (known as 64 1/2s). I own one. It was made in early June, of 1964. I took the orignal 289 out ( so I wouldnt feel bad if it blew) and put one from a 66 in it.

289 D codes are almost everybit as hard to find as a 289 K code. D code was made for only 3 months and there were only a few thousand made, I belive production was under 3 grand. Thats one of the reason why you dont see many 64 1/2s with 289's. My car has the correct early hood and head lamp buckets.

I just recently took the generator off and converted it over to an alternator. I'm keeping all the original stuff so if I ever decide to change it back to original. My car has the early passenger side seat that doesnt move, no back up lights (another 64 1/2 only feature), the early horns, and the whole shabang.
