Noisy 9" Rear

Just installed a used set of Ford 3:70 gears and now the rear makes a whirring/light grinding noise when you are up to speed and then give it a little gas to keep it there. If you let off then the noise goes away. From a dead spot the noise is not there until you get to speed and then it gradually comes back. Any ideas? The pinion bearing is not the same one that was in there before could that be it? It has only gone 10 miles since the new gear has been installed. Is this caused by needing to be broken in? The noise seems to be less today than yesterday. Thanks in advance.

This is from a bad gear install. It is why a lot of people just let good rearend shops do gear installs. Give it some time, bit may get better, but your going to have to live with some of it, unless you re-install your gears.

I'm with skyman. Bad gear installation.

How was the gears contact pattern? Could be loose bearings since as long as you keep the gears loaded it makes no noise.

A properly set up 9" makes virtually no noise.

This is a link to a page with some installation procedures.
